Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca is a sacred plant that awakens the mind and connects to spiritual dimensions of power.

La planta sagrada de los pueblos indigenas

In the Shipibo cultural conception, ayahuasca is the mother of all forest plants, it is considered a sacred plant because its effect allows to open the dimension of the spirit of the plants and to ascend to the level of the gods.

Ayahuasca ceremonies, practiced by indigenous peoples of the Amazon, such as the Shipibo, are considered a powerful means of spiritual and physical healing. During these ceremonies, a beverage made from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and other plants, containing psychoactive compounds, is consumed.

The ayahuasca potion is prepared by cooking for several hours with another plant called “chacruna” until it becomes a dark brown, thick and sour decoction. The shaman then uses this potion to open his mind and enter the spiritual realm of his medicine from which he can “see” his patient, make a diagnosis and perform the healing work.

Ayahuasca opens the subconsciousness, awakens the giant that lies dormant in us, the inner “I”; while chacruna opens the mental images or visions. Western ethnobotanists and chemists have a different explanation; they say that ayahuasca inhibits an enzyme in the stomach, which allows the DMT in the chacruna to access the brain and trigger a psychoactive effect.

The fact is that ayahuasca transports the shaman to a different dimension of reality. It is like a vehicle that allows him to access other worlds. He enters what we call the World of Medicine or Rao Nete, which in reality is made up of an infinity of universes. With specific training, the shaman can travel to these worlds and explore them. He can access the spiritual dimensions of the plant worlds, dive into the depths of the water world, travel to the center of the earth, soar in the cosmos, travel in time past and future; gain knowledge and understanding on all kinds of subjects. This knowledge is what he uses to cure illnesses and also to help and guide the members of his community.

The advantage of ayahuasca over other psychoactive substances is that it does not create any kind of addiction, the effects of the plant, even when it is strong, never lead to a loss of consciousness about what is happening in this dimension. Nothing is forgotten during a ceremony, we are always aware of this dimension,

Ayahuasca ceremony

The ayahuasca ceremony is a sacred healing ritual practiced by the Amazonian peoples.

Ceremonia de ayahuasca durante la noche

The ayahuasca ceremony is a nocturnal spiritual ritual performed by healers for the treatment of physical and emotional illnesses. Through the ayahuasca ceremony, the healer connects with the powers of medicinal plants and spiritual forces, so that he can "see" the condition of his patient, establish a diagnosis and treat the person.

At the beginning of the ceremony, the healer prays blowing on the content of the ayahuasca asking God and the spirits of the plants to guide the ceremony, to allow to have a good state of trance "dizziness", good vision and healing power; then, he is invited to drink a glass of ayahuasca if desired. After everyone has taken the plant, the trance effect is quietly waited for to begin, which can take from 20 minutes to an hour. Already under effect, the healer begins to sing the opening of the ceremony, opening the World of Medicine.

In an ayahuasca ceremony, the healer sings different chants called "Icaros", blows with tobacco smoke, uses different fragrances, cleans with branches of master plants, performs massages and extracts by suction the evil magic darts.

This first part can be a bit challenging. Although our mind is opening to new perceptions, it can react and get a little confused by this unexplored territory, just as we can feel a little disoriented when we arrive in an unknown country. If we maintain confidence, focus on our intention and breathe calmly, we can walk through this door in a few moments.

Plants can show us the answers to what we are looking for. Visions can take many unexpected forms and every ceremony is different. We can see beautiful landscapes, be full of love and joy or experience more difficult feelings such as fear, confusion, doubts, dark visions... whatever happens, it is always advisable to remember that this is the effect of the plant, nothing more, nothing less. When we go through difficult feelings or experiences, we can always return to our intention, look for a quiet space within ourselves and stay calm. It is also possible to ask for help during our ceremonies; our healers and helpers will attend to you.

Throughout the ceremony, the healers guided the progress of the work and sang to call positive energies. They also perform an individual work on the people who attend, singing to bring healing, releasing unwanted energies, clearing the mind, opening the heart, reinforcing the connection with the dieting plant, bringing pleasant feelings and visions.

The visions are a response to your intention given to you by ayahuasca and its diet plant. The plant does not always bring visions, it can interact with you in many different ways. Plants have their own way of helping us, which is often not so easy to understand with our human intelligence, at least during the process.

Once the healer has done his work, they close the ceremony. Even so, you may still feel some effect from ayahuasca, although usually the effect will be reduced and you will feel a deep sense of well-being or you will fall asleep.
